Graded Slab Sizes: PSA vs BGS vs SGC vs CGC vs TAG

PSA, CGC, and TAG slabs share almost the same footprint, about 135 × 80 mm (5.3 × 3.15 in). What separates them is thickness. BGS slabs are shorter, wider, and thicker. SGC slabs are the biggest in every direction. PSA is the thinnest slab at 6.25 mm, and BGS and SGC tie for thickest at 8.5 mm.

Grader Height Width Thickness
PSA 135.75 mm (5.34 in) 80.25 mm (3.16 in) 6.25 mm (0.25 in)
BGS 130.75 mm (5.15 in) 83.00 mm (3.27 in) 8.50 mm (0.33 in)
SGC 138.50 mm (5.45 in) 86.25 mm (3.40 in) 8.50 mm (0.33 in)
CGC 135.00 mm (5.31 in) 80.25 mm (3.16 in) 7.50 mm (0.30 in)
TAG 134.75 mm (5.31 in) 80.00 mm (3.15 in) 7.25 mm (0.29 in)

Will my slab fit something made for another brand?

The rule of thumb: gear made for a bigger slab holds a smaller one, loosely. Gear made for a smaller slab won't hold a bigger one. Here's every combination of standard holders, checked against the numbers above.

Your slab Made for PSA Made for BGS Made for SGC Made for CGC Made for TAG
PSA Exact No: 5.00 mm too tall Loose Tight (0.75 mm too tall) No: 1.00 mm too tall
BGS No: too wide, too thick Exact Loose No: too wide, too thick No: too wide, too thick
SGC No: too big all around No: too tall, too wide Exact No: too big all around No: too big all around
CGC Footprint yes, 1.25 mm too thick No: 4.25 mm too tall Loose Exact Tight (0.25 mm over)
TAG Footprint yes, 1.00 mm too thick No: 4.00 mm too tall Loose Yes Exact
  • Yes: smaller or equal in every direction, close fit.
  • Loose: fits, with more than 1.5 mm of play. Expect it to slide or rattle.
  • Tight: less than 1 mm over. Depends on how much clearance the accessory was built with, so it can go either way.
  • Footprint yes, too thick: fits sleeves and open frames. Won't seat in cases, slots, or lipped bumpers cut to the other grader's depth.
  • No: too big in height or width.

This is a paper check. Accessories are built with a little clearance, usually a fraction of a millimeter, and holders vary slightly between generations. Sleeves stretch. Hard plastic doesn't.

Which dimension matters depends on the gear

  • Sleeves: height and width matter, thickness barely does. This is why PSA, CGC, and TAG often share sleeves.
  • Bumpers and frames: the outline matters most. Thickness matters only if the frame wraps over the front or back of the slab.
  • Magnetic cases, one-touch cases, and slotted stands: built to a thickness. A CGC or TAG slab in a cavity cut for PSA is 1 to 1.25 mm too thick and won't close or seat.
  • Storage boxes: width decides whether a slab fits the row at all. Thickness decides how many fit.

The cross-brand questions people actually ask

Are PSA, CGC, and TAG slabs the same size?

Almost, in height and width. All three land within 1 mm of each other at roughly 135 × 80 mm (5.3 × 3.15 in). Thickness is where they split: PSA is 6.25 mm, TAG is 7.25 mm, and CGC is 7.5 mm.

Will a TAG slab fit in a PSA bumper or case?

On footprint, yes. A TAG slab is 1 mm shorter and a quarter millimeter narrower than PSA, so it sits slightly loose in anything cut to the PSA outline. The catch is thickness: TAG is 1 mm thicker. Sleeves and open frames handle that fine. A bumper with lips that wrap the front and back, or a magnetic case cut to PSA depth, may not close over it.

Will a CGC slab fit in a PSA sleeve or case?

Sleeves, usually, though snug. CGC is the same width as PSA and 0.75 mm shorter. Rigid cases cut to PSA depth are a different story: CGC is 1.25 mm thicker, the biggest thickness gap of the three look-alikes, so it often won't seat or close.

Will a BGS slab fit in a PSA box, stand, or case?

Usually not. BGS is 2.75 mm wider and 2.25 mm thicker than PSA, so slots and cavities cut for PSA bind. It doesn't work the other way either: a PSA slab is 5 mm taller than BGS. PSA and BGS gear doesn't swap in either direction.

Will an SGC slab fit anything made for PSA?

No. SGC is bigger than PSA in every direction: 2.75 mm taller, 6 mm wider, and 2.25 mm thicker. It's the one slab that always needs grader-specific gear. The flip side is useful: anything sized for SGC will hold every other standard slab, just loosely.

Which grading company has the biggest slab?

SGC, by every measure: tallest at 138.5 mm, widest at 86.25 mm, and tied with BGS for thickest at 8.5 mm. BGS is the shortest slab at 130.75 mm. PSA is the thinnest at 6.25 mm.

Why are BGS slabs so thick?

Beckett seals the card in an inner sleeve inside a heavy, welded holder. The result is a standard BGS slab about 8.5 mm thick, roughly 36 percent thicker than a PSA slab.

Thick, tall boy, and oversized holders

Thick holders mostly keep the standard footprint and just get deeper, so they still fit most storage rows but not cases or slots cut for standard thickness.

Thick holder Height × width × thickness Notes
PSA 135.75 × 80.25 × 10.25 mm (5.34 × 3.16 × 0.40 in) For cards over 40pt. PSA picks the holder.
BGS 130.75 × 83.00 × 8.50 mm (5.15 × 3.27 × 0.33 in) Measured the same as standard. Autograph and patch slabs can run thicker.
SGC 138.50 × 86.25 × 9.50 mm (5.45 × 3.40 × 0.37 in) Same footprint as standard, 1 mm deeper.
CGC 135.00 × 80.25 × 12.50 mm (5.31 × 3.16 × 0.49 in) CGC makes thick holders in more than one depth. This is one of them.
TAG None TAG grades cards up to 50pt and doesn't offer a thick holder.
Tall boy holder Height × width × thickness
PSA 183.75 × 107.50 × 7.35 mm (7.23 × 4.23 × 0.29 in)
BGS 181.50 × 115.00 × 9.15 mm (7.15 × 4.53 × 0.36 in)
SGC 184.25 × 101.50 × 7.50 mm (7.25 × 4.00 × 0.30 in)
CGC 195.00 × 113.50 × 10.00 mm (7.68 × 4.47 × 0.39 in)

Tall boy holders are not interchangeable. CGC's, added in December 2025, is more than 11 mm taller than PSA's. PSA's Jumbo holder for oversized items is listed by PSA at 9.73 × 13.21 × 0.322 in (247.1 × 335.5 × 8.2 mm).

How many slabs fit in a 12-inch row

Standing on edge, bare, and nested on their stacking ridges. This is the number that matters when you're buying a storage box.

Grader Bare Sleeved
PSA 55 47
TAG 47 40
CGC 43 39
SGC 42 35
BGS 38 35

A box that holds 55 PSA slabs holds about 38 BGS slabs. If a listing gives one capacity number for every grader, it's quoting PSA.

Why slab sizes online don't agree

  • Card size posted as slab size. 2.5 × 3.5 in is the card, not the slab.
  • Inside posted as outside. PSA's 2 11/16 × 3 13/16 in describes the space for the card, not the holder.
  • Rounding. Rounding to the nearest 1/16 or 1/8 inch can put a number 2 mm off.
  • The stacking ridge. Measuring with or without the ridge on the back changes thickness by up to 1.4 mm.
  • Holder generations. The same grader's holders can vary by a few tenths of a millimeter from one generation to the next.

Where these numbers come from

PSA, Beckett, and SGC don't publish outside holder dimensions. CGC lists its holder at approximately 3.15 × 5.30 in, and TAG lists 5.25 × 3.125 in. The numbers on this page come from digital caliper measurements published by Card Capsule (three samples per holder type, agreeing within 0.01 mm), including their stacking measurements and row counts. They line up with CGC's and TAG's published figures to within about 1.5 mm, and with fit sizes published by frame and case makers.

If you're designing or buying something with a tight fit, caliper your own slab first. Holder generations vary, and a few tenths of a millimeter is the difference between snug and stuck.

Slabster gear and these sizes

Every Slabster bumper is sized to one grader's standard holder: PSA, BGS, SGC, or CGC. Match the bumper to the slab. Shop bumpers.

Our display risers take slabs up to 9 mm thick, so every standard holder on this page seats, including BGS and SGC at 8.5 mm. Thick holders don't. How many risers fit in a Zion case.

More questions

What size is a PSA slab?

A standard PSA slab measures about 135.75 × 80.25 × 6.25 mm (5.34 × 3.16 × 0.25 in). A PSA thick holder, used for cards over 40pt, keeps the same height and width and grows to 10.25 mm thick.

What size is a BGS slab?

A standard BGS slab measures about 130.75 × 83.00 × 8.50 mm (5.15 × 3.27 × 0.33 in).

What size is an SGC slab?

A standard SGC slab measures about 138.50 × 86.25 × 8.50 mm (5.45 × 3.40 × 0.33 in). The SGC thick holder keeps the same footprint at 9.5 mm thick.

What size is a CGC slab?

A standard CGC slab measures about 135.00 × 80.25 × 7.50 mm (5.31 × 3.16 × 0.30 in). CGC lists its holder at approximately 3.15 × 5.30 in.

What size is a TAG slab?

A standard TAG slab measures about 134.75 × 80.00 × 7.25 mm (5.31 × 3.15 × 0.29 in). TAG lists its slab at 5.25 × 3.125 in. TAG grades cards up to 50pt and doesn't offer a thick holder.

Did the new 2024 PSA slab change size?

Not on paper. PSA says its 2024 holder has identical outside dimensions and is about 20 percent heavier. Collectors do report small thickness differences between holder generations, so a sleeve or case that fits one PSA slab perfectly can feel slightly different on another.

Which slab sleeves fit which slabs?

PSA-size sleeves fit PSA and usually CGC and TAG, snugly. BGS/SGC-size sleeves fit every standard slab, but run loose on PSA, CGC, and TAG. TAG says its slabs fit most standard graded card sleeves.

How much does a graded slab weigh?

No grader publishes an official weight. PSA says its 2024 holder is about 20 percent heavier than the one before it. Collector weigh-ins put BGS and SGC slabs at roughly half again the weight of a PSA slab.
